French representative Lavigne proposed that May 1, 1886, the day of the struggle of American workers for an eight-hour workday, be designated as a common festival for the international proletariat. The representatives present unanimously agreed and passed this historic resolution.
On July 14, 1889, a congress of socialists, convened by Marxists from various countries, opened in Paris, France. At this congress, the French representative, Lavigne, proposed that May 1, 1886, the day of the American workers' struggle for an eight-hour workday, be designated as a common festival for the international proletariat. The representatives unanimously agreed and passed this historic resolution. Thus, "May Day" International Workers' Day was born.
